I have had this discussion with a few friends and foes. And have been a social media expert, which I quickly refuted. I view Social Media as a cultivation device that helps build community. The ROI is impossible to track.. Ask any business what a fan on there Facebook is worth and they can't answer. If you use your community you can leverage SEO efforts, which is missed by a lot of SEO's.

In the end I think Social Media is about engagement. If you can engage your fans you develop lot of champions that help spread you brand.

In general Social experts sell snake oil, but I hear people say the same about SEO. I think the barrier to entry on Social Media is low, so people jump in.

Further I have two friends who are amazing a social and will get your shit business 10k in fans. One of the friends makes a lot of money and sell all kinds of stuff leveraging influencers in social.

He's right. Almost all of them are clowns. SEO, PPC, and social media are given such a bad name by people who read books and think they grasp these high level concepts as you mentioned. Until you actually bring some solid ROI for a client, you don't have anything to stand on. By the way, Gary's book, "The Thank you Economy", is a ridiculously awesome book worth anyone's time.

yes they are Clowns (mostly)! I am mostly anti-social media gurus except in specific cases like:

-they are great for more techie industries (scientists, programmers, seo's)
-cases where you are selling a low pricepoint info product ($40 how to get organized ebook or seminar or software)

I haven't seen it work too well outside of those, from a relatively direct ROI perspective.

In the same breath, I think it's incredibly valuable for ~$10,000,000+ brands who can use social media to engage with people and get them interested in their brand.

No way! I can't tell you how helpful your talk was, and especially the downloads. It's not like I can knock on the door of my competitors and ask them to show me their audits! That's one of those tightly held industry things, you can't really compare yourself to your peers because no one wants to share their formulas or formats. It was hugely helpful.

That, and I do still retell your duplicate content joke whenever I have to express the sheer volume of your awesomedness to someone. =)

Thanks for sharing your theory, though I would have not used the term evil to describe buying links nor in business unless the activity causes mortal harm in nature. To take a trip down this rabbit hole, people buy their way to the top whether buying organic links, ppc links or pay people such as you to do your best to influence search engine algorithms organically. Though Google does frown upon buying links and has measures implented to discover and not count these links as a benefit - Google states in webmaster journals that they do not penalized sites with purchased links. If this were the case, I could set a "link" farm and flood it with links to your site. I assure you Google would not penalized you for my actions. Its pure Myth. Now on-site blackhat implentations such as cloaking and the like, you are sure to be sandboxed quickly. However, with regard to others linking to you - its not a question of labeling the activity, its a question of whether the money thats placed behind it with give you a return.
